The TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) prize is awarded annually to an "exceptional individual" with "one wish to change the world". Past winners have included chef Jamie Oliver, author David Eggers, president Bill Clinton and U2’s Bono. Last October it was announced that the street artist/photographer JR would be the 2011 recipient of TED’s $100,000 award. And with this came an opportunity for JR to state and fulfill his wish: "I wish for you to stand up for what you care about by participating in a global art project, and together we’ll turn the world...INSIDE OUT."Via GOOD

The How to Project
Via Louella Court. Cool instructional posters. Description below from the creator, Michael Arnold. His site is down right now but hopefully it will be back soon.
The How To: Project is run solely by Michael Arnold, a 19 year designer from the UK on his gap year. With the aim of teaching himself about design in the real world, the How To: Project brings limited screen-prints based around learning useful skills. Hand printed by the Get A Grip Studio in Birmingham in editions of 30, each print bought goes towards printing the next design.“There is a major disconnect between the life of a design student and the transition to being a design professional.”This quote from the book ‘Never Sleep’ summarises perfectly the purpose of The How To: Project. The other reason I’m doing this is because it’s fun, I have enjoyed learning CSS and web designing from scratch, I gained confidence in talking to customers and communicating with prints and as a designer I have improved, in understanding and skill. I have always maintained that I’ll keep doing this until it no longer becomes fun. Or I lose my hands. Or die.Hopefully that’ll give you an insight into this project and it’s future. If you want to collaborate with The How To: Project or even just suggest an idea for a print feel free to contact me at – thehowtoproject@aol.co.ukKeep learning!~Michael Arnold

The Red Bulletin
On Friday I received a free copy of Red Bull's new magazine, The Red Bulletin. Although I'm not the target (extreme sports) I noticed right away that it is very well designed and contains beautiful photography (example below). My husband noticed that there is a free ipad app for the magazine, which we downloaded. Each page has an option to see more dynamic media using the attributes of the ipad. Very well done-both the magazine and the free ipad application. Interestingly enough, there is an article about Red Bull's marketing efforts today. Read it here.

Saturday Book Review: Faithful Place by Tana French
Sorry, Saturday Book Review is a little late. I posted about Tana French a couple weeks ago and was hoping her third book (which got the best reviews) was going to be really good. I was disappointed.
I guessed pretty early who committed the crime and there were only a couple two pages when I couldn't put it down. I almost stopped a couple times but thought I'd find out what happened. Pretty anticlimactic for a mystery.
I wouldn't waste my time with this one. If anyone has some book suggestions I'm ready for a good one!

Nomoco
I was reading through the current Elephant magazine (which they carry at Borders) and came across the work of Kazuko Nomoto. I love the look of watercolor-she mixes inks with water and uses a dip pen. See more of her work here. A little about her from Pocko:
NOMOCO was born in Fukuoka, Japan and currently lives in London. She graduated from Osaka University of Arts, Japan, subsequently graduating from London College of Communication, UK, with a BA in Graphic Design, and Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, UK, with an MA in Communication Design. She has exhibited her work in solo and group exhibitions in London, Milan, Tokyo, Singapore and New York. Nature and the French Horn are her inspiration. She enjoys experimenting with various materials and craft-work in her works. For the past few years, she has been especially keen on playing with ink and its organic movement. She also produces work under her full name Kazuko Nomoto.

Typefaces of the World
I came across this poster by Shelby White in the current issue of Print Magazine. Then I searched online for it and it came up on FPO where I found out he is a local and created designspiration-a site a love because you can use search terms to narrow down what you're looking for. Love his style.

Obsessed with PCC Natural Markets
Lately I've been feeling like a completely different person. My food intolerances (gluten, dairy, eggs) have forced me to eat better which has also led to working out. Along my journey to getting healthy I have begun to learn more about what foods I'm putting into my body. I always knew fruits and vegetables were good for you, I learned all about the food pyramid in school, but I never truly realized it until now.
I attended the Walk, Talk & Taste class (free) at PCC yesterday. The class was led by Leika Suzumura, R.D. Some key takeaways I didn't know were:
•PCC does not carry any products that contain high fructose corn syrup
•PCC does not carry any products with food coloring
•PCC does not carry any products with hydrogenated oils, artificial trans-fats
•Brown rice has four times the nutritional value of white rice (great, I just bought more white rice at Costco)
I feel like I've been eating bad stuff my whole life. I hope by turning it around now, I can reverse the effects all those french fries.
I just made some Kale chips last week. I found out what Kale was two weeks ago-it's a hearty leafy green. Here is a link to the recipe. Tasty, easy and good for you!

Movie Barcodes
I'm a little angry with Google as they deleted 2 of my posts. One I can't remember but this is one they deleted.
This site takes each frame of a film and creates a barcode out of it. Prints are also available for purchase. Pretty cool way to see the color palettes of movies. Here are a few samples.

Saturday Book Review: The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein
This is a heartfelt story about human connection, life and love all told from the perspective of a dog. Very clever and moves along quickly. Also based in the Seattle area so nice to know what areas he's talking about. If you are in the mood for uplifting, probably not a good one to pick up-but you'll like it nonetheless.

Studio 8 Design: Elephant Magazine
Exceptional editorial design by Studio 8. I may have to subscribe to Elephant magazine even though I have no idea what the subject matter is.

Movie Barcodes
This site takes every frame of a movie and compresses them into a barcode. Interesting to see how each movie converts into its own color palette.

Google Chrome Ads
Two separate people posted these ads for Google Chrome. When viewing the "It Gets Better" spot I didn't realize it was for Chrome originally. Great spots. I can't figure out what agency did them. Maybe Google in-house?

Massimo Vitali Photographer
Came across Massimo Vitali while paging through National Geographic this weekend. I love his take on crowds and the environment. Pretty cool site as well.
